FogScreen, on show at TiLE recently, can make objects seem to appear and move in thin air - it's a screen you can walk through!
The screen is created by using a suspended fog generating device. There's no frame around it; it just replaces a conventional screen and works with standard video projectors. With two projectors, different images can be shown on both sides.
The fog used is dry, so even if someone stays under the device for some time they don't get wet, and is made with ordinary water. There are no chemicals used in its manufacture.
FogScreen is available in two models: the original FogScreen Inia which has a fixed screen size of 2m x 1.5m, and the FogScreen One, whose screen width is 1m but which is modular in construction which means that several can be linked together to create a seamless screen of virtually any width.
The screen can be made to appear and disappear merely by switching it on and off.
The company says that applications for FogScreen include the entertainment sector (casinos, night clubs, live shows and hotels), museums and science centres, brand promotion, exhibitions and retail.
Helsinki-based FogScreen has won numerous awards, including TESA (The Event Services Association) Award for Innovation 2006; the EU's 2005 European IST (Information Society Technologies) Prize; the PLASA 2005 Award for Innovation; the 1st prize in Laval Virtual 2004 (user interface category) and InnoSuomi 2003.
